Counselling for Anxiety

Even though anxiety and depression may be separate diagnoses there can often be an overlap between them.

 

Anxiety is an emotion which is part of the range of normal human functioning. It is an appropriate response in situations where we are worried about the possible outcome of a challenging circumstance.

 

Anxiety becomes a concern when it is severe or continues for an extended period of time, and leads to some impairment of the individual’s functioning in their health, relationships, work and everyday life.

Anxiety may present in different forms including some of the following conditions:

How you might recognise if you or someone you know are possibly suffering from anxiety:

Manifestations:

​

  • Catastrophising

  • Excessive fear

  • Making hasty assumptions

  • Obsessive thinking

  • Pessimistic

  • Struggling with uncertainty

  • Worrying excessively

Symptoms:

​

  • Difficulties concentrating

  • Difficulties sleeping

  • Headaches

  • Loss or increase in appetite

  • Nausea/dizziness

  • Racing heart

  • Rapid breathing

  • Restlessness

  • Tension

Presentations:

​

  • Avoidance of anxiety associated situations

  • Becoming uncharacteristically quiet

  • Developing protective compulsions to manage anxiety

  • Developing substance reliance on food, alcohol or drugs

  • Inability to maintain regular work functioning

  • Procrastinating

  • Struggling to complete day to day tasks

  • Withdrawing from social connecting

Anxiety has many different ways of presenting itself and can undermine an individual’s daily functioning in both a mild and severe manner. Therapy is recognised as having much to offer the individual towards the reduction or elimination of the debilitating aspects of anxiety.
