What is anxiety? How is it different to stress?

Anxiety is often our body’s response to uncertainty about the future or worry about past experiences. It can cause physical symptoms like sweating and shaking, and interfere with daily activities.

However, when individuals encounter it more frequently or persistently, they may be dealing with anxiety disorder. The causes for it are complex and can involve various psychological factors such as past trauma, ongoing stress, or substance abuse.

Fear and anxiety are natural responses that occur when we perceive a threat or danger. These reactions are essential for helping us stay safe and avoid harm. While they are normal, anxiety can also be beneficial in moderation, as it can motivate us to stay focused, plan effectively, and look after our health. However, anxiety without real danger, can become overwhelming and long lasting, leading to distress.

Stress is a response to an external pressure or challenge, like a work deadline or exam, and usually resolves once the situation is over. It can motivate action but in excess can also cause physical tension and fatigue.

Consulting a psychologist specialising in anxiety is one of the most effective ways to manage and overcome anxiety disorders.
